Membership in the Society

NOTE:  There will be a proposal forwarded at the Society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in December, 2006 to change the Society’s membership requirements and benefits for members.  This website will be updated accordingly with the results from the AGM

Society Membership

The only requirements for being a member of the Society are to pay annual membership dues of $30 and to be in good standing with the New England Rugby Football Union (NERFU) and the United States of America Rugby Football Union (USARFU).  Membership dues are waived for first year referees.  Dues payments can be made on-line via Pay Pal, or contact the Society Treasurer

In addition to being a member of the Society, there are additional requirements to be able to take on specific activities:

Requirements for Active Referees

To be assigned matches by the Society, member referees must:

  1. Pass the USA Rugby Level 1 Certification Course and maintain currency with USA Rugby referee requirements
  2. Annual registration with USA Rugby through the CIPP program
Requirements for Referee Evaluators

If you are interested in becoming a referee evaluator, please contact the Director of Evaluation ( evaluation@nerugbyrefs.org )for more information.

Requirements for Referee Coaches

If you are interested in becoming a referee coach, please contact the Referee Education Officer ( education@nerugbyrefs.org )(REO) for more information.

Society Benefits

The most important benefit of membership in the Society is your continued enjoyment of the game of rugby.  Members of the Society are eligible for a variety of benefits depending on their role and the number of Society assignments accepted.

General Member Benefits

Members who pay the annual dues (waived for first year referees who accept match assignments) receive the following benefits:

  • Right to vote at the Annual General Meeting
  • Dinner at the Annual General Meeting
  • Invitation to the Annual Dinner at the NERFU Club Championships
  • Reimbursement of match related expenses.

Additional Benefits for Active Referees

An “Active Referee” for the purpose of receiving society benefits is defined as a referee who accepts assignment by the Society to five Saturday matches in a calendar year.  “Active Referees” receive all of the benefits of general membership listed above, plus the benefits listed below during each year that the referee meets the match assignment requirement.

Reimbursement of CIPP and other required fees paid to USA Rugby
  • IRB Law book
  • Society jersey
  • Reimbursement of USA Rugby training and certification course fees
  • Partial reimbursement of conferences fees (on a case by case basis)
  • Consideration for Referee Exchanges
  • Annual Dinner at NERFU Club Championships (Newport) for member and guest
  • Partial reimbursement of $30 towards membership in the National Association of Sports Officials (NASO).  NASO membership provides liability insurance coverage beyond that provided by USARugby through the CIPP Program.
Additional Benefits for Active Coaches and Evaluators

Referee Evaluators and Referee Coaches are critically important to the success of the Society. If you are interested in becoming a referee evaluator, please contact the Director of Evaluation ( evaluation@nerugbyrefs.org ) for more information.  If you are interested in becoming a referee coach, please contact the Referee Education Officer ( education@nerugbyrefs.org ) (REO) for more information. There is not currently an official definition of "Active Evaluator" or "Active Coach" but individuals who support the Society in these roles can anticipate the same benefits as those offered to "Active Referees" as described above.
