The first thirty minutes saw URI with the majority of possession and sustained multi-phase attacking moves, but UConn's strong defense kept URI mostly out of their 22 and the try zone. Although UConn had less possession, they made several significant breaks through the the URI defense, threatening to score, but they were unable to finish on all but one occasion. The only score of the first half came when the UConn tight head prop ran through from a penalty about fifteen meters out. The conversion failed. With about ten minutes left in the first half, the sky opened up and torrential rain flooded the pitch, after which the play slowed and the handling became very messy. UConn's dominant scrum made its mark in the second half, and UConn again had the only try of the half, this time converted.
