North Shore: 29    Old Gold: 23

On a wet and somewhat muddy pitch, the first half was closely contested as each side was able to run in three tries; a missed conversion by Old Gold with three minutes left in the half is the only reason the score was not tied at the half (19-17 North Shore). While Old Gold had better structure on attack, penalties and turnover ball cost them throughout the match, and North Shore was able to exploit quick penalties and counter attack wide from turnovers for long breaks, some of which resulted in scores. An early penalty by North Shore in the second half extended their lead to 22-17, and Old Gold matched with their own penalty a few minutes later to stay two points down. Following that kick, Old Gold upped their game and was able to put the ball deep into North Shore territory for most of the next 20 minutes, pressuring the North Shore defense with relentless attack. Great defense by North Shore and excellent scrummaging by their pack kept Old Gold out, but the pressure was finally rewarded with a penalty kick which gave the visitors the lead for the first time all day, 23-22. Old Gold was able to put the ball into the North Shore end after the kickoff and pressure North Shore once again, trying to run out the clock. But North Shore did not give up; a penalty for leaving their feet in a counter-ruck by Old Gold was followed by a quick tap and a wide attack which ended up in a game winning converted try for the hosts.
