SCORE
Albany Knickerbockers: 43    Newport: 34

Great start to the 2016 season on a warm day. Newport elected to play downhill in the first half (Albany's field has a noticeable slope) and reversed an early Albany surge with a 27-21 halftime lead. Albany dominated the second half scoring, with four unanswered tries before a Newport score which was too late to stem the tide. A number of factors contributed to the Albany win: piling up an early lead due to a combination of luck (one perfect bounce in front of a kick chaser at full speed never hurts) and skill (Albany's #10 charged down a would-be clearing kick from Newport's 5m line which resulted, eventually, in a try); playing downhill in the second half; having a deeper bench; and clearly winning the fitness battle in the second half. Among the many notable individual performances, Newport's #9 was an excellent game manager, but Albany's fullback consistently entered the line wide to create nightmares for the Newport defense. Great credit to both teams for a clean, hard, fun match.
