Boston University Women: 17    University of Massachusetts - Amherst Women: 34

Cool and blustery fall evening of very good rugby on BUs artificial, multi-sport field. It was a match of persistent UMass possession and stout BU defense, with the visitors patiently probing for overlaps or missed tackles. Very impressive and for the most part disciplined rugby.

UMass had most of the ball in the first quarter of play and were able to put in two unconverted tries (the wind was a big factor in kicking game). BU kept its composure and, taking advantage of UMass penalties and a 10 minute 1-player advantage) to pull ahead to 12-10. Back at full strength, UMass ended the half up 12-15.

It was more of the same in the 2nd half, with long periods of multi-phased play, both teams using forward and backs to try to unlock opposing defenses. UMass exploited speed on the wings, with #11 making huge gains, scoring 2 tries and creating a 3rd to put the match away. Consistent with the poise and fight of both teams, UMass did not fold and worked the ball down for a final try in the last minute.

Compliments to both teams, captains, and coaches for a very good, hard fought match.
