Franklin Pierce University: 17    Champlain College: 13

The game was played on a multi purpose astro turf field which led to some confusion over field markings. A number of players sustained open abrasions and heavy bruising on the unforgiving pitch. Both sides fielded numerous players involved in their first game of rugby which presented many refereeing challenges. Franklin Pierce played a very physical game with a high premium on contact. Inexperience and lack of knowledge of the laws led to repeated penalties on both sides and at stages coaching took precedent over refereeing to ensure player safety. Franklin Pierce employed their physicality to good effect to score three tries and a conversion. Champlain scored two tries, one from a kick chase and charge down, and a penalty. The game was marred by overly physical challenges and high tackles mainly by Franklin Pierce. This led to a yellow card for not wrapping in the tackle just before half time, and a red card towards the end of the game for a flagrant and dangerous neck tackle off the ball at a breakdown. Both incurred by Franklin Pierce players who had been repeatedly warned about on field conduct. Final score Franklin Pierce 17, Champlain 13. The FP captain displayed good leadership skills and worked well with the referee to alleviate many issues.
