Match Report for

Middlebury College (1st) vs. Norwich University (1st)
28 October 2017

Location: Match will be played on the rugby pitch behind the Athletic Complex on S Main St

Middlebury College: 10    Norwich University: 22

Beautiful sunny day, though a bit windy, which led to less tactical kicking than the teams are used to. It was also homecoming weekend, which led to a lot more fans being at the game. They were treated to a very physical, passionate rugby match between two heated rivals.

Lots of sloppiness at breakdowns made this a difficult match to manage, I think I managed to call every possible ruck-related penalty over the course of the first half, disappointing given the teams involved and the importance of the game. There was one sin bin in the first half for a Norwich high tackle (repeat offense) and Middlebury quickly capitalized with an unconverted try in the 23rd. The two teams traded tries at the end of the half for a Middlebury 10-7 lead at the intermission.

In the second half, scrums started to deteriorate as well, with wheeling and collapsing becoming a problem, making for a second half with little flow. There was a late second yellow card for repeated infringements given to a Norwich forward, in retrospect, maybe a few more yellows earlier on would have tidied things up. Norwich did score three tries, two in the last ten minutes to seal the victory.
