29 October 2017

Location: Park in Lot J by the Athletic Center, follow signs for Vendetti Field

SCORE
Nichols College: 85    Saint Anselm College: 7

On Sunday, October 29th, under a constant cold rain, the Nichols College men's rugby team hosted St. Anselm's at Vendetti Field in Dudley, MA. The new multi-purpose turf field was not lined for rugby but had other useful lines. Due to pre-match ceremonies honoring Nichols' seniors, and St. A's arriving a bit later than planned, kick-off went on a little later than scheduled, at around 1:15pm. To start the match, St. A's elected to defend the side of the field nearest to the residential neighborhood and Nichols would kick-off.

Forcing a quick turnover and getting the ball into space wide, Nichols would start the scoring less than one minute into the match. Nichols' scoring pace would barely slow from there on out as their well-coached and skillful backline would dominate in open play. St. A's put together their only scoring phase about 15 minutes into the first half and were able to convert the kick. At the half the score was 45-7 for Nichols.

The trend of Nichols' try scoring and accurate conversion kicking would continue in the second half as both sides brought in less-experienced players which created opportunities from infringements for both sides, though St. A's was unable to capitalize. In all, Nichols would pile up 13 tries and an impressive Nichols fullback would convert 10/13 from all angles.

It's worth noting that despite the lop-sided scoring, both sides were able to maintain respect and sportmanship toward each other and the tough physical contact throughout never devolved into foul play. The final score came to 85-7 for Nichols.
